Napali Coast Boat Tours

No road reaches the 16 miles of Na Pali Coast cliffs between Polihale and Kalalau, some of them 4,000 feet high, so a boat or a helicopter is the only way to see them. What separates Napali Coast boat tours from one another is the boat, the harbor, the season and the rules on who may ride.

Each card below covers one bookable tour: the price, the boat, the harbor, the food, the ages and the cancellation terms. Prices marked "from" are the lowest adult rate on the listing, and every price is per person. Payment runs through the booking platform, not the operator. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before departure on most listings, while the Holo Holo tours refund in full up to 7 days before. The Kikiaola tours leave from a harbor the state listed as closed until further notice after Hurricane Lowell, so confirm their departure point with the operator before you travel. The catamaran snorkel tours compared on the price per person, the guest cap, the harbor and the snorkel stop. Figures come from the tour listings, and "Not stated" means the listing gives no cap. The power catamaran from Kikiaola treats snorkeling as a bonus when conditions allow.

What the Day Looks Like

Catamaran days start early. The Lucky Lady snorkel cruise checks in at 6:45 AM, the 'Imiloa morning tour at 7:45 AM, Lady Kailani at 8:00 AM and the Napali Navigators boat at 8:45 AM. The run up the coast takes you past the sea cliffs, with the crew narrating the history and legends of the coastline.

Snorkel time on the Kauai Sea Tours boats runs 30 to 45 minutes when conditions permit, with gear and instruction provided. Food is part of the ticket on every listing, from a continental breakfast and deli lunch on the Holo Holo catamaran to build-your-own sandwiches on the Lucky Lady. The big boats carry shade, padded seating and restrooms, with fresh-water showers on some, which is what makes them the easy pick for families.

Minimum ages run from 3 on the Kauai Sea Tours boats, 4 on the Amelia K larger vessels and 5 on Holo Holo, and children ride with an adult. Pregnancy is the common exclusion: Holo Holo and the Kauai Sea Tours boats do not take expectant mothers, and the Amelia K allows pregnant guests only in summer up to 22 weeks with an approved doctor's note.

Sail or Power

Two boats on this page are sailing catamarans, the Holo Holo Sail and Snorkel and the evening Sunset Sail with Dinner. The rest are power catamarans or powered boats, which cover the coast faster and hold a set schedule. Speed matters for the Kikiaola listing, a 35-foot power catamaran the operator sells as a thrill ride, where mornings are calm and afternoons are windy and wet.

Comfort favors the big Port Allen cats: Lady Kailani is a 65-foot dual-engine boat with dining tables and two restrooms, and the Lucky Lady has a waterslide and an open bar. On seasickness, the trade-off is simple. Afternoon runs are rougher, so the calmer morning departures are the safer bet, and operators advise taking medication beforehand.

No listing refunds seasickness.

Raft Tours and the Sea Caves

Rafts are the small, fast, wet way up the coast, and they are the boats that get inside the sea caves. Here is what each one costs and who it takes.

The Raft Lineup

The raft tours compared on the price per person, the guest cap, the minimum age and the harbor. Two leave Kikiaola and two leave Port Allen, and the figures come from the tour listings. The groups are smaller than on the catamarans.

What a Raft Does That a Catamaran Cannot

The headline is cave access. A raft small enough to enter the sea caves will take you inside Open Ceiling Cave, a collapsed lava tube open to the sky that can only be reached by boat, and past Waiahuakua, described as the largest cave on the coast at about 1,155 feet long. Large catamarans cannot enter the caves because of their size, though some get close or partly in.

The trade is comfort. Na Pali Riders describes its own ride as rough and fast, compared to white water rafting on the ocean, and you sit on the tubes with no shade and, on some rafts, no restroom. The exclusions are strict for good reason: no pregnant women, no guests with back or neck problems, heart conditions, recent surgeries or low fitness, and minimum ages of 5, 6 or 7 by listing.

The Na Pali Raft Snorkel also caps guests at 250 pounds. If that list touches you, book a catamaran instead.

Caves Are Never Guaranteed

Sea cave entry depends entirely on daily ocean conditions and is never guaranteed. Winter north swells shut the caves and often the north end of the coast, which is why Na Pali Riders runs its caves-only expedition in the calmer stretch from May 17 to September 20, while its caves plus snorkel tour runs year-round. Morning departures get the best conditions, and afternoons get bumpier as the wind picks up.

Two practical notes on the Na Pali Riders trips: you check in at the Waimea office and drive your own vehicle to the harbor, and parking at Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor costs $20 plus tax per vehicle for 8 hours, paid at check-in. Confirm the departure point with the operator, as the harbors section explains.

Sunset Dinner Cruises and the Niihau Day

Three cruises end the day with dinner under the cliffs, and one listing goes further, a full day across the channel to Niihau. Here is how they compare.

Dinner on the Water

The table lines up the four evening and full-day listings by price, length, meal and boat. All of them leave Port Allen. The Holo Holo sunset cruises cost the same at $247, so the choice between them is a 3.5-hour cruise on a 65-foot catamaran or a 4.5-hour sail on a 50-foot one.

Sunset Dinner Cruise$2473.5 hoursHawaiian-style dinnerCatamaran

The Sunset Runs

The Holo Holo Sunset Dinner Cruise serves a Hawaiian-style dinner with mai tais, beer, wine and juices, plus a champagne toast at sunset, and passes sea caves and sails under waterfalls when weather allows. The Sunset Sail with Dinner runs the same coast under sail on a 50-foot catamaran with indoor and outdoor seating and restrooms, with appetizers before the meal. The Lucky Lady Sunset Cruise is the longest at 5 hours, serving an Island Style Taco Buffet with an open bar of beer, wine and Mai Tais for guests 21 and over.

The Lucky Lady listing states plainly that its sunset run has no swimming or snorkeling. Check-in times run from 1:15 PM on the Lucky Lady to late afternoon on the Holo Holo boats, and sunset time varies by season.

The Full Day to Niihau

The Niihau and Na Pali Full Day is the only 7-hour listing, leaving Port Allen for the coast and then the 17-mile channel crossing to Lehua, which takes roughly 45 minutes to 1.5 hours by catamaran. The captain picks the best spot at Lehua Crater to snorkel, an area with at least 25 fish species and visits from monk seals and manta rays, and a deli-style buffet lunch is served on the sail back. The boat does not land on Niihau.

The island is privately owned by the Robinson family and off-limits to outsiders, so you see it from the water. Cancellation is tighter than the rest of the page: full refunds run to 7 days before departure. It suits strong stomachs and confident snorkelers who want the far west end of the chain.

Anyone prone to seasickness should skip it, since the crossing can be rough and the day cannot cut short for a queasy guest, and pregnant women are not permitted.

Port Allen or Kikiaola: Where the Boats Leave

Every Napali Coast boat tour on this page leaves from one of two west-facing harbors on Kauai. The harbor you pick sets how long you drive at dawn and how long the boat runs before the cliffs appear. Each harbor has its own page: Port Allen and Kikiaola Harbor.

The Two Harbors Side by Side

Port Allen sits on the eastern shore of Hanapepe Bay on Kauai's south coast and has 34 berths, 6 moorings, a 2-lane 30-foot-wide launch ramp, a loading dock and restrooms. Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor lies two miles west of the Waimea River mouth near Kekaha, with 4 moorings for draft under 3 feet, a boat ramp, loading dock and restrooms. The drive times in the table come from Hawaii Guide.

Most operators, including Holo Holo and Kauai Sea Tours, list their check-in addresses on Waialo Road in Eleele.

Port Allen or Kikiaola for the Ride

Kikiaola sits closer to the Na Pali sea cliffs than Port Allen, so boats from Kikiaola spend less of the day in transit. Port Allen boats run longer to reach the same cliffs. On the Kikiaola side, Na Pali Riders checks guests in at its office at 9600 Kaumualii Highway in Waimea, then guests drive their own vehicle to the harbor, and parking at Kikiaola is $20 plus tax per vehicle for 8 hours, paid at check-in.

On the Port Allen side, Holo Holo checks in at 4353 Waialo Road Suite 5A in Eleele, and Kauai Sea Tours checks in at its office in the Port Allen Marina Center at 4353 Waialo Road.

Why Not Hanalei

Hawaii's Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation says it does not issue commercial permits for Hanalei Bay operations, and it limits commercial activity at Hanalei through Hawaii Administrative Rules to address community concerns. In 2009 neighbors picketed an attempt to run Na Pali tours from a Hanalei River boatyard, and the county said the permit did not authorize launching. DOBOR also cited one Hanalei operator for three illegal commercial trips and sought a $15,000 penalty before a settlement.

Hurricane Lowell closed all Kauai state parks from September 8, 2026, including the Na Pali Coast. DLNR lists Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor as closed until further notice. At Port Allen, the launch ramp reopened on October 2, 2026 while slips and moorings stayed closed with extensive damage. The tours that list Kikiaola as their departure harbor are affected. Confirm the departure point with the operator before you travel, and the platform refunds a trip the operator cancels.

Can You Drive to the Na Pali Coast?

No. Kauai's main road does not circle the island, and there is no road between Polihale and Kalalau. The stretch of coast between Polihale Beach and Kalalau Beach can only be reached by boat or helicopter. The land side is the Kalalau Trail, an 11-mile (18 km) route that starts at Kee Beach at the end of Highway 560.

Visitors reach the trail through Haena State Park, which needs advance reservations, and hiking beyond Hanakapiai requires a valid Na Pali camping permit. Camping permits are released 90 days ahead and often sell out months in advance in summer.

Summer and Winter Seas

The sea in front of the cliffs changes between the seasons. Summer brings calm water and open sea caves, winter brings north swells and whales. Whale season in detail is on Kauai whale watching.

Summer Against Winter

Summer and winter compared on the sea, the caves, the whales and the tours that fit, from the operators' own notes. Makana Charters calls June through August the busiest stretch on the water and says the winter swell subsides then, with fewer cancellations and better access to sea caves and Nualolo Kai. Capt Andy's notes swells are more common in winter and spring while summer is calmer.

Humpback whales arrive in winter, and Na Pali Experience says summer conditions may allow snorkeling while winter brings the whales.

SeasonSeaSea cavesWhalesWhat to book
Summer (May to September)Calm seas, steadier trade winds, fewer cancellationsBest access, entry still depends on daily ocean conditions and is never guaranteedNo humpbacksZodiac Raft Sea Caves and Snorkel for the caves, Niihau and Na Pali Full Day for the channel crossing
Winter (October to April)North swells, rougher and wetter ridesNorth end and caves often cut off, caves weather-dependentHumpbacks roughly December to AprilHolo Holo Sail and Snorkel or Na Pali Raft Snorkel with the chance of whales

What Winter Swell Changes

Winter swell cuts off the north end of the coast and the sea caves, and rafts become significantly rougher in fall, per Hawaii Guide. Catamarans run year-round with earlier departures, weather-dependent caves and shorter snorkel stops in fall. Captains reroute when the north shore is too rough, and Kauai Sea Tours says its tours may reroute to the south coast, with rerouted trips non-refundable.

Weather cancellation by the operator brings a full refund per Holo Holo, and Holo Holo tours proceed in rain unless there is a lightning safety concern. Sea cave entry depends entirely on ocean conditions and is never guaranteed.

Water and Air, Morning Against Afternoon

Holo Holo says the water temperature runs 74-80 F year-round. Kekaha, the closest town to Kikiaola harbor, has a mean daily temperature of about 72 F in winter and 80 F in summer, with a hot semi-arid climate and about 17.84 inches of rain a year. Lihue averages 78 F in February to 85 F in August and September.

Operators are consistent on the time of day: Na Pali Riders says morning tours have better conditions and afternoons get bumpier as the wind picks up, and Holo Holo asks guests to check in early to catch typically calmer morning conditions.

What You See From the Water

The cliffs rise up to 4,000 feet (1,200 m) above the Pacific across a coast of deep narrow valleys ending at the sea. Every boat on this page runs the same line of sights, and the differences come down to boat size, season and how close the captain can get. The coast on foot is on the Kalalau Trail page, and the place itself on Na Pali Coast.

A raft in the sunlit water of Open Ceiling Cave, reached on raft Napali Coast boat tours Boat only · calm seas

Open Ceiling Cave

Known as Pukalani, meaning hole into the heavens, it was a closed lava tube whose ceiling collapsed through wave erosion. Entry depends on daily ocean conditions and can only be reached by boat. Holo Holo's vessels are too large to enter sea caves fully but can get close, while rafts go inside. Fits best: Zodiac Raft Sea Caves and Snorkel.

Honopu Arch and Beach

Honopu Valley has a 0.25-mile beach known as Cathedral Beach, and no boat or aircraft may land there, so visitors only see it from offshore. Wikipedia describes the arch as roughly 90 feet tall, the tallest natural arch in Hawaii, though a second source lists a different span and height, so treat the size loosely. Kauai Sea Tours lists a Honopu Sea Cave with a waterfall near the entrance. Fits best: Lucky Lady Snorkel Cruise.

Kalalau Valley

The valley is ringed by cliffs more than 2,000 feet high, with an accessible area about 2 miles long and 0.5 miles wide. Holo Holo names the cathedral cliffs of Kalalau Valley as the photo backdrop on its sunset run, which passes sea caves and sails under waterfalls when the weather allows. Fits best: Sunset Dinner Cruise.

The reef and beach at Nualolo Kai below the cliffs on Napali Coast boat tours Raft landing · summer

Nualolo Kai

Makana Charters says Nualolo Kai snorkeling becomes accessible when ocean conditions permit, and summer brings the best odds. Three raft operators hold permits to land passengers there: Captain Andy's, Kauai Sea Tours and Na Pali Explorer. Fits best: Na Pali Raft Snorkel.

Lehua crater at sunset, the snorkel stop on the Niihau day of Napali Coast boat tours Full-day trip only

Lehua Crater

Lehua sits 0.7 miles north of Niihau and is a State Seabird Sanctuary. The Kaulakahi Channel crossing is 17 miles and takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours by catamaran, and the snorkel sites hold at least 25 fish species with visits from monk seals and manta rays. Fits best: Niihau and Na Pali Full Day.

Polihale

Polihale State Park marks the southwestern end of the Na Pali coast, with dunes that can reach nearly 100 feet. Napali Navigators runs west along the Polihale beach, the longest in Hawaii, before turning north to the sea cliffs. Fits best: Snorkel Tour with Lunch.

Dolphins, Whales, Turtles and the Viewing Rules

The waters off the Na Pali Coast hold spinner dolphins, green sea turtles, Hawaiian monk seals and, in winter, humpback whales. Federal and NOAA rules set exact distances boats and swimmers must keep, and the crews on these tours follow them.

Spinner dolphins surfacing off the Na Pali Coast, a common sight on Napali Coast boat tours

The Distance Rules

Four animals compared on season, the distance to keep and the rule behind it, from NOAA viewing guidelines and federal rules. Holo Holo says swimming with dolphins is prohibited by federal law. Vessels underway may continue normal navigation if dolphins approach them, but crews may not pursue, and the spinner dolphin rule bars interception, meaning placing a vessel in the path of a dolphin.

Hawaiian monk sealYear-round50 feet, 150 feet from a mother with pupNOAA guideline, no approach
Green sea turtleYear-round10 feetNOAA guideline, no touch or chase

Humpback Season and What the Tours See

The sources disagree slightly on the humpback window. Holo Holo says humpbacks are visible December through April, Captain J's runs humpback watching from December 15 to March 31, and NOAA's sanctuary materials say November to April with a peak from January to March. Roughly December to April with the peak in January to March is the safe summary. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary was established November 4, 1992 and covers 1,400 square miles, and the sanctuary says more than half of North Pacific humpbacks use Hawaiian waters seasonally. Its Kauai Ocean Discovery visitor center in Lihue opened in 2020.

Spinner dolphins rest in shallow bays 4 to 5 hours a day and feed at night offshore, and an adult measures 129-235 cm. Holo Holo says dolphins are most often seen on morning tours, and Makana says spinner dolphins, Pacific bottlenose dolphins and honu are commonly spotted along the route. Na Pali Riders lists dolphins, turtles and monk seals as possible on its raft runs. No operator on this page publishes sighting odds, so treat every sighting as a bonus rather than a promise.

Before You Book a Napali Coast Boat Tour

Practical rules that come straight from the tour listings and Hawaii law. None of these are opinions.

Do

  • Do take seasickness medication before boarding, because no tour refunds seasickness. Holo Holo advises taking medication in advance, avoiding alcohol and acidic drinks, and resting well the night before. Morning trips are calmer, and operators including Na Pali Riders and Holo Holo all recommend early departures.
  • Do use reef-safe sunscreen, because Hawaii Act 104 bans the sale of sunscreen with oxybenzone or octinoxate without a prescription. Kauai Sea Tours and Na Pali Riders list reef-safe sunscreen on their packing lists, so bring your own.
  • Do book a morning departure when you can, because summer mornings bring steadier seas and better odds of entering the sea caves. Na Pali Riders says mornings have better conditions while afternoons get bumpier as the wind picks up.
  • Do read the health rules before choosing a raft, because rafts exclude pregnant women and anyone with back or neck problems. The Na Pali Raft Snorkel requires a high level of fitness and caps guests at 250 lb per person, while catamarans like the Lady Kailani Luxury Snorkel ride smoother with restrooms and shade.
  • Do check the cancellation terms before paying, because they differ. Every listing except the Holo Holo tours refunds in full to 24 hours before departure. The Holo Holo tours, including the Holo Holo Sail and Snorkel, refund in full to 7 days before, which gives more room if plans change.

Don't

  • Don't bring a full-face snorkel mask, because Holo Holo prohibits them and Captain J's bans them too. Standard masks and gear are provided on the snorkel tours.
  • Don't book a raft for a pregnant traveler or anyone with back or neck problems, because every raft listing excludes them. The Zodiac Raft Sea Caves and Snorkel also rules out heart problems and recent surgeries, and describes the ride as rough as white water rafting on the ocean.
  • Don't book a sunset cruise expecting to swim, because the Lucky Lady Sunset Cruise includes no swimming or snorkeling. It is a 5-hour ride with a taco buffet and an open bar, and the water stops are on the morning tours instead.
  • Don't assume the departure harbor is fixed, because Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor is listed as closed until further notice after Hurricane Lowell. Confirm the departure point with the operator before you travel, as the harbors section explains.

Is a Napali Coast Boat Tour Worth It

An honest weighing of what a boat ticket buys and what it cannot fix.

What we genuinely like

  • A boat is the only way to see the coast between Polihale and Kalalau besides a helicopter. The state describes permitted boat tours as the only legal way to reach the Na Pali shore areas other than hiking.
  • Snorkel stops and meals come in the price on most catamarans. The Holo Holo Sail and Snorkel at $274 includes a continental breakfast, a deli lunch and snorkel gear, and the Lucky Lady Snorkel Cruise at $233.73 includes a build-your-own sandwich lunch and an open bar.
  • Raft tours enter the sea caves in calm seas. The 30-foot Zodiac rafts of Na Pali Riders and the 37-foot Naiad rafts of Captain J's are small enough to go inside, which big catamarans cannot do.
  • Dolphins are often seen, with spinner dolphins commonly spotted along the route, along with green sea turtles and humpback whales from roughly December to April.
  • Entry prices start at $184.80 per person for the Na Pali Raft Snorkel, the lowest price on this page.

The honest downsides

  • Port Allen is far from the cliffs, so a large part of any south-shore tour is the ride out and back along the coast before and after the cliffs.
  • Seasickness is real and no tour refunds it, which matters most on the 7-hour Niihau and Na Pali Full Day.
  • Winter swell cuts the sea caves and the north end. Operators note summer brings better cave access and fewer cancellations, and rafts get significantly rougher in fall.
  • Rafts exclude pregnant women and guests with back, neck or joint problems, so the small-boat experience is not open to everyone.
  • Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor, the departure point of the west-side tours, is listed as closed until further notice after Hurricane Lowell.

Who it's NOT for: Anyone who cannot handle a long, bouncy boat ride with no refund for seasickness, or a pregnant traveler set on a raft, should look at a helicopter or save the coast for a calmer season.

Which Napali Coast Boat Tour Fits You

Six common situations, each matched to one option from the catalog.

If You are bringing children

The Lucky Lady Snorkel Cruise takes children from age 3 and has restrooms, shade and a waterslide. The tips section covers the rules on every boat.

If You get seasick easily

Pick a bigger catamaran such as the Lady Kailani Luxury Snorkel, a 65-foot boat with two full-size restrooms, and read the seasickness advice in the tips section before you take medication.

If You want to go inside the sea caves

Only a raft fits. The Zodiac Raft Sea Caves and Snorkel enters the caves on calm days, with more on cave access in the raft section.

If You want the cliffs at golden hour

The Sunset Sail with Dinner is a 4.5-hour evening sail with dinner and a champagne toast, and the other evening options sit in the sunset section.

If You want the full-day trip to Niihau

The Niihau and Na Pali Full Day runs 7 hours with a Lehua Crater snorkel stop, described in the sunset and full-day section.

If You want the lowest price

The Na Pali Raft Snorkel is $184.80 per person for 5.5 hours with a snorkel stop, and the full price list sits in the comparison table.

The most reviewed option is the Amelia K Boat Tour with 2,065 reviews and a 4.9 rating. Compare all of them in the comparison table.

What is the cheapest boat tour on the Na Pali Coast?

The Na Pali Raft Snorkel from Kauai Sea Tours is the lowest price at $184.80 per person for a 5.5-hour small-group raft trip from Port Allen with a snorkel stop. The next cheapest is the 'Imiloa Express Snorkel at $211.99. Prices are listed in the tour catalog.

Catamaran or raft, which is better on the Na Pali Coast?

A catamaran gives shade, restrooms, a lunch table and a smoother ride, while a raft is faster, wetter and small enough to enter the sea caves when the sea allows. The raft tours section explains the trade-offs and the health rules that come with the small boats.

Can you drive to the Na Pali Coast?

No. Kauai's main road does not circle the island and the coast between Polihale and Kalalau is reachable only by boat or helicopter. A boat tour from Port Allen or Kikiaola is the standard way onto the water.

Which harbor do the Na Pali boat tours leave from?

Port Allen in Eleele on the south shore for most tours, and Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor near Kekaha for the west-side trips, which shortens the ride to the cliffs. Kikiaola is listed as closed until further notice after Hurricane Lowell, so confirm the departure point with the operator, as the harbors section explains.

What is the best Na Pali Coast boat tour for kids?

The Lucky Lady Snorkel Cruise takes children from age 3 and runs a 5.5-hour day with a waterslide, restrooms and a 30 to 45 minute snorkel stop when conditions allow. The Super Raft Snorkel starts at age 6 and the Na Pali Raft Snorkel at age 7, so rafts suit older kids only. More on ages in the tips section.

The pick of this page is the Holo Holo Sail and Snorkel, a 5-hour sailing catamaran day from Port Allen at $274 per person with breakfast, lunch and a snorkel stop.

Free cancellation to 7 days before departure for a full refund.
